The opening sequence starts off with the production company which is Dreamworks. The first thing we see is an extreme longshot of the location of the opening sequence and the rain reflects that something bad might be about to happen. As the camera slowly zooms into the house, we begin to hear a girl talking, However it is made clear that it is not a voiceover when we get a longshot of two girls in a room together, watching television. It is made clear that the girl laying on the bed is quite smart by the stuff she is saying about electrowaves, and the other girl does not seem too bothered by what she is saying. The first question the viewer may ask is; Who are these two girls? As the two girls are talking, the camera slowly moves in closer to the girls. They then begin to talk about a video tape that kills you when you watch it, which foreshadows what is about to happen. As the girl with dark hair explains what happens when you watch the tape, the camera slowly moves in towards her face. This shows the seriousness of what she is saying, that the girls may see it as a joke now but they won’t later. The other girl then begins to look worried and claims that she has seen the tape. She then pretends to choke which shows that they are typical teenage girls who like to joke around and then begin to talk about boys. In a way this is a stereotype of teenage girls, that all they do is joke around and gossip about boys. As the girls are gossiping, the phone begins to ring and the girls instantly stop joking around and their faces turn serious, as they was just talking about the tape that kills you if you watch it. We then get a close-up of the clock and it is made clear that is late and near the time in which the girl watched the tape exactly a week ago. We then get a low angle shot of the girls feet as they slowly walk down the stairs and then a longshot of the girls slowly begin to approach the ringing phone. This shows how scared the girls are of who it may be calling. The girl with dark hair(who we then find out her name is Becca) then decided to play a joke back to Katy and act serious when she answers the phone when it was only Katy's mum calling. As soon as Katy gets off the phone, the television turns its self on, which shows that something bad is about to happen. At first, Katy thinks it is just Becca playing another trick on her, but when she turns around and the television turns on again, she knows that something is now right. The camera then begins to slowly zoom into the reaction on Katy's face which shows she is now fearful of what might happen. We then see a close up of Katy's face next to the fuzzy television and she abruptly pulls out the plug and we see her staring into the screen as if she is unsure what to do. She then sees a shadow run past in the kitchen and as she slowly walks into the kitchen she see's the fridge door begin to open and runs to shut it. This leaves the viewer wondering who or what is is that is playing these mind games on Katy. Is it her friend Becca or is it something to do with the video tape? We get a high angle shot of Katy at the bottom of the stairs as she slowly begins to walk up, scared of what she might find upstairs. The camera then focuses on Katy's feet as she runs up the stairs. When she gets to the top of the stairs, we see water on the floor and the camera stays at a low angle and we see Katy's reflection in the water as she slowly walks towards her bedroom door. We can also see dim flashing from underneath her door and a strange/spooky sound. We see an extreme close up of the door handle dripping with water and Katy's hand as she grabs the door handle, unsure if she wants to see what is behind her bedroom door. As she opens the door, we see an image of a well and the camera quickly zooms out from the television and then quickly into Katy and we see black circles around her eyes. This leavs the viewer wondering why there was a well there and why her face looked like it did when she saw the images on the television screen. We then really quickly see images of a horses eye and a ring shape then the same fuzzy pattern as we saw when the television turned itself on. The genre of the film is Horror.
