The sequence starts with the distribution companies which are 'Dimension Films' and '2929 Productions' which are both shown along with a dark/ mysterious type of soundtrack that only lasts the same amount of time in which the company logos appear which is only a few seconds long. From these Distribution logos, the viewer would expect the film to be horror, which it is but the first thing the viewer hears is an upbeat christmas song, so the music is contrapuntal which may leave the viewer wanting to see more. The first shot we see is the location which is a house and coincidentally shot at night . We then see the house and the house decorations being shown from many different shots such as an extreme long-shot, close-ups etc. When the first character is introduced, the main shots are extreme close ups, the close up of the snow globe and the present and the character picking up the cork to open her wine. In the opening sequence we see a lot of the colour red and a lot of the colour black, which represents the genre of being horror and the colour red to represent blood. Her wine is red, the cork, the present she is wrapping and the colour of the ink she uses. When she goes to look in her wardrobe when she hears the sound, the lighting is dark and a piece of her red clothing stands out more than anything else, which may lead the viewer to think that something is going to happen in the wardrobe. The viewer is then shocked when a black bin bag is placed over her head and she is then stabbed with her red pen. The viewer probably did not expect for that to happen which makes the opening sequence leaving the viewer to want to see more, find the reason in which she was killed. The narrative of the film is that the opening sequence gives a reason for the plot which creates suspense for the viewer. The opening sequence is a typical horror sequence. The colours are either red or black, the lighting is dark, we have a character alone, doing something, the viewer knows something is going to happen and the opening sequence helps build up to the viewer expectations and then the moment comes for the opening sequence to set up the plot. This leaves the viewer asking why has she been murdered? who has murdered her? who is she? etc.
