First of all we see the production companies which are; Universal, Studio Canal, Miramax and Working Title. The film opens with the main character, Bridget Jones, walking through heavy snow. This sets the scene, as the viewer suspects it is Christmas. A voiceover of the main character begins and she starts by saying "It all began" as if she is starting to tell a story. This draws the reader in as it is as if we are there with her throughout the story. The voiceover tells us a bit of background information so the viewer has an easier understanding of what is going on. We then begin to meet some other characters. First of all, Bridget's mum, who is wearing a very old fashioned blouse which stereotypically reflects the type of mum she is, who likes to interfere in her daughters personal life. We then meet her mum's friend, Uma, who is also dressed in an old fashioned dress. Bridget's mum straight away starts telling Bridget of a man she wants to set Bridget up with, and we hear a voiceover of the main character talking again which shows the viewer her thought process so it is as if we are there in the scene with Bridget. The stereotype continues when Bridget's mum dresses Bridget in some similar type of clothing she would dress her self in, this reflects the stereotype that Bridget's mum wants her to dress and be just like her. Its is as if Bridget's mum is still trying to treat her like her child although it is obvious she is past the adolecsent stage. Bridget's clothes are red which reflects the time of year to be Christmas. We then meet Bridget's dad and it is clear he is nothing like Bridget's mum as he talks about his wife as if he is fed up with her. He thinks the same as what Bridget thinks which shows a bond between father and daughter. She then meets Mark, the man Bridget's mum is trying to set her up with and it is then made clear that he is dressed in a ridiculous jumper with a raindear on it which reflects the setting to be christmas. The way Bridget acts in the opening sequence foreshadows how she is going to act throughout the whole film- embarassing herself alot. We get an idea of the difference in personalities between Bridget and Mark by the way they both talk.It is obvious that Mark is intellectually superior to Bridget by the way he talks e.g. Verbally incontinent. Mark also mentions that she dresses like her mother which proves Bridget's mothers stereotype to be correct. The scene then changes and we see where Bridget lives. The voiceover is continued and we get Bridget teling us the viewer how she feels. This is helping the viewer understand what life if like through Bridget's point of view and may help the viewer relate to the character. We then begin to see the credits appear. The font in which has been used is like handwrtiting to reflect Bridget writing in her diary. We then hear the sone 'All By Myself' by Celine Dion, which reflects Bridget and how her life is. The viewer now knows that she lives alone and is seems as if she drinks and smokes as a way of keeping herself busy and numbing the fact that she is alone and single. We do see Bridget fade in and out of the scene, this shows the viewer that time is moving on. Bridget's flat is very messy which reflects the type of person she is. Also, the colour of her pajamas which are red reflects back to the time of year that is Christmas. When Bridget starts singing, it reflects that she can relate to the song as she is all by herself. We then see the title of the film appear and it is as if Bridget is singing to the credits. The genre of the film is Romantic Comedy.
